Ave Jeanne

HOW FRAGILE IS AMERICA

large full sun,

the jet touches

one edge

then the other.

how fragile

and trivial

you are

america.

do you hear

your thin children

howl beneath

dissension...

do you think

terrorism

can unite

these many

restless roads..

THERE IS NOT ANOTHER

there is not a brother

or sister whose name I can

remember.  they are

buried deep, deep

beneath any dream,

below any repeated

commercial, beyond

any uncomforting

political statement.

they are silenced by

their own angers.

tormented with this

lack of compassion,

and frightened away

by yellowing apathy

that runs freely

across america's

darkened highways
