Innocence We have just started going out. We are riding in a car with friends. You see a girl go by on a bicycle. "That reminds me of sex." Everyone laughs. We all go out to eat after a dance. You order chili. It comes with bread. You dip it, "that reminds me. . ." They laugh. I laugh too. We pass a place in the park. You roll down the window and point. "There. I used to have sex with a girl there when I was in college." I laugh. You are fifty years old. On Halloween you smoke a cigar on the front steps while handing out candy. It bothers me. It reminds me. . . We visit your old girlfriend over the holidays. I go to visit my parents. You spend the night with her. We make love when I get back. Then you tell me about it. Sex reminds you of sex. She reminds you of sex. I remind you of anger and obligation. Our sex reminds you of her. My bicycle has flat tires. |
