Hierarchy

Salad first, moose second -
The order of things climbing the containers;
Like, the walk and then the clock
(distance then time).
The little marzipan iris
sits delicately
atop the whipped cream.

Of course, the salad is gone.
Even the glass plate has been taken
by a slightly flustered waitress
with a slick Demi Moore haircut
and an attitude
which belongs
more to New Orleans
than Santa Fe.

Everything has its place,
even the old fashioned salt-shaker
which I spill
because I'm coming back
for some more thick, rich moose
and probably more of those oils
which caress the robust leaves of the salad.

Graph Paper and Water Cycle

Impregnated clouds cover the hills.
The hills cover themselves with
a green evenly-spread blanket.
My mother would say, "not much diversity".

Coming up the highway
we can see rain on the piedmont -
a wash of color
covering our drive through

the needles
covered with telephone wires
which frame the landscape
in ways it was not meant to be framed.

The cottonwoods show us the rivers
and we rename the valleys
as fog covered wishes
in which to lay our card games.
