An odd sight to reminds me ...
April 11, 2000
On my way to the birthday party
My head turned
Something had caught my eye
An appletree in spring blossom beauty
Stood straight adorned with red Christmas lights In April
I didnt think much about the sight
All but a sense of oddness prevailed
Of how spring and winter combined on that tree
The passage of time lighting up
The fluffyness of the blossoms in the dusk
It wasn't until much later that night
That the image of that appletree came back to me
As I danced to the band at the Gallery Cabaret with my daughter
I thought of the 26 spring times which have passed since her birth
And how over two decades ago I paced my sparsely furnished living room
Wondering if this was labor or fear I felt in pangs
And how all of the fear and the pains of the years
Remain only as illusions in my memory now
And what counts in life is this odd juxtaposition
Of electric red lights on a spring-blossomed appletree
Standing tall alongside a city street
Moistened by snow flakes from earlier that evening
Testimony to the beauty that comes suddenly amidst hardship
Or is strung by human hand just to make sure
