Kirby Wright

Molokai Budget Vacation

The lawn is full
Of weeds and stumps.

Trees have been
Beheaded here.

Two dogs fight
Over an eel carcass-

They choose sides,
Stretch it like rubber.

The smell of death
Defeats the gardenias.

My plywood shack
Overlooks a harbor

Stuffed with lobster shells
And liquor bottles.

The beach east
Is thin and beige.

The shallows to the west?
A minefield of sting rays.

Automatic Sons

You taught us
The importance
Of doing what you said

Not seeing
What needed to be done.
Through instructions,

You undermined
Our ability to feel.
Now you stand

In Depends
Directing a penis
With shaky hand,

Squirting amber
Into the tall grass
Beneath your window
