E. William Martin

"Glimmer"

We streamed back to my house
Slick from the rain
Your hair pulled back,
It always did look better wet.

Your fingers in mine, pulsating
I opened the Merlot and fidgeted like I do
To pour your glass and still look sexy,
My eyes never losing yours.

Uncomfortable in the power outage
Candles outlining the shadows of your expression
I led you back and asked
If you ever knew of love?

And you said yes, both knowing
You were looking only at me.
"It was always you," she said.
"Even when it wasn't, it was always you."

"Icarus"

Roll with the wind unicorn.
Bow your mane to the red clouds.

Land on the dream
& hear her cry

Blood flowing with the purity - not of men who

Already fail to deliver
Before even delivered upon.

Born with the sins to tread.

Weakness felt in the tight reign
Soaking the spirit & whispering the soft
Glowing light of the street corner splits

The invitation to come on in
Have a bourbon & coke, no ice
Or go home to the wife,
Decisions.

Entering the pub
To tell your life story in neon darkness
To total strangers off the edge of caring

Inventing a new life.
Masquerading a new time
Where things are different.
Where happiness follows
Instead of misery against reflection.

Here you make more money
& your wife makes you happy.
The sex is great
& she cooks like Emeril,
Your weight never a problem.

You could only wish the same
Success to these listening squatters.

Ring the bell so everyone will cheer
Look among them & buy a round,
No one better than me around these parts.

Roll with the poison seething in your veins,
Light up & walk away smiling.

Count the concrete lines of the journey
As your wings unfeather
At the cracked feathered sunrise

Falling back to the unforgiving earth,
Falling back
Whistling as you go.
