THE SEASONS AND THE MEALS AND ALL THE OTHER DISAPPEARING ACTS

uncle dutch
worked in a garage
for a thousand
years
that's what is
known as
exaggeration
the closest thing we have
to truth

SENSE

the ladies stood talking
at one lady's door
they remembered
they speculated
they explained
they talked a long time
then they parted
it made sense
to the wind the dust
captain godhead and me

I
NEXPLICABLE

breaks your heart
breaks your heart
breaks your heart

he kept saying it
again and again
breaks your heart

his heart was penned
in a dry field
shivering

and the only rescue
was
so final

SHUFFLES

no
longer
understood
by
the
library
staff

THE LOWDOWN

after i finished writing
the sun also rises
i gave it to a guy
i barely knew
told him go ahead
claim it's your own
i just like the creating
not the hassles afterward
i don't know whatever
became of him
but i
went on to write
things i called
look homeward angel
the grapes of wrath
and on the road
all of which i just left
lying in furnished rooms

STILL-LIFE (or What The Old Man Said)

everybody i ever knew
is either dead
or very confused
we have encyclopedias
for looking things up
but sometimes you get
too tired to
bother
